Our simple school policy is:

• Every child should be reading at home several times a week - we'd like you to aim for 5 times a week. 
  • This is the number one priority!
• Most children will have some words to learn each week (spellings). 
  • Please practise during the week so you improve your test score.
  • Your teacher might give you a Look/Cover/Write/Check sheet to help you.
• Learning Maths Facts - times tables, number bonds, telling the time, etc.
  • Please practise during the week so you improve your test score.
  • Your teacher might give you a worksheet to help with this.

Reading

Whenever children have read, a note can be made in the yellow Learning Diary.  This will earn children Dojo points.

We all know that points mean prizes - for 100 points, children win a Bronze sticker; for 200 points, a Silver sticker; and for 300 points, a Gold sticker, plus a prize book from the special cabinet.

Learning Spellings

The best way to practise these is to use a 'Look, Cover, Write, Check' method. Children should have a good look at the word they are learning, then cover it up and try to write it correctly.  Then uncover the word to check that it has been written correctly.  Children can also practise without writing - asking your children to say the sounds/letters in the right order is good too.

Learning Maths Facts

Also shown in the yellow Learning Diaries are the Maths Facts that children should be trying to achieve at relevant ages.  Don't worry if your child finds these either too easy or too hard - just write a note to the class teacher in the Learning Diary and they will provide you with some guidance.

For times tables, simply chanting them is a good start.  Children do need to be able to remember the facts in a random order as well though, so mix it up a bit.
